Most owners of a brain are now aware that the mass hacking of celebrity nudes was not a scandal but a sex crime, as Jennifer Lawrence bravely emphasized when she broke her silence to Vanity Fair this week. But it seems some people still don’t fucking get it. One of those people is Wendy Williams.
On her talk show yesterday Williams addressed Lawrence’s V.F. feature, and the victim-blaming word vomit just would not stop. Williams focuses on this statement of Lawrence’s in particular:
“Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this. It does not mean that it comes with the territory. It’s my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting.”
After reading that out the audience claps, because duh, Jennifer Lawrence is 100% correct. It’s absolutely disgusting. But Williams then gleefully admits she looked at the photos “several times” before asking the audience to clap (really, Wendy? A raise of hands wouldn’t work here?) if they have too, in an absolutely disgusting show of solidarity for perpetrating an illegal act.
Obviously some people didn’t clap, but Williams refuses to believe that not everyone is an asshole and straight-up accuses them of lying.
“Jennifer Lawrence, don’t sweat this, young lady,” she continues. “You’re the one who took the pictures.” And after pointing that her long-distance boyfriend (presumably Nicholas Hoult) is still going to look at porn regardless of whether he also has your nudes, which is probably true but definitely unfair:
“In my opinion, if she would just stop talking about the cloud, and the naked pictures, it would go away. We’d forget about it! Besides Jen, you don’t look bad under your clothes, and I think the hacking has actually made your career even hotter. She was red-hot before, but now it’s like heat-seeking missile hot. So hold your head up with pride!”
Translation: Hey ladies! Don’t bother calling out sexual offenses, just go shopping or something to take your mind off the horror and illegality of the situation. And FYI, committing sex crimes against women is totes cool if the victim is young and hot. They should thank you for making them even hotter, those ungrateful floozies!
The only funny part about this is Wendy telling Lawrence to STFU already when the V.F. feature is literally the first time she’s addressed this. I think it’s pretty obvious who needs to stop talking here.
